ON A COLLECTION WRITTEN IN EASTERN TURKISH

It is known that the period called Eastern Turkish or Islamic CentralAsian Turkic literary language continued to exist in the historicaldevelopment of Turkic until the 19th century. In this period, many workswere written on diverse genres and subjects. One of these works is acollection of poetry in eastern Turkish, which is preserved with the archivenumber Hs. 474 in the Special Collections of the Groningen UniversityLibrary in the Netherlands and dated to possibly late 14th century,consisting of the third part of an anthology containing three different works,one in Arabic and two in Turkish. The verse parts in this manuscript, which are the subject of this article, are written in quaternary form and are among the folios 33a-57b of the aforementioned manuscript. This collection poetry is incomplete at both the beginning and the end. In fact, the text are damaged in places corresponding to some poetic parts. No title is mentioned in the manuscript. In the collection, each part in verse is headed with the Arabic word li-ġayrihī ‘by someone else’. Although the text contains some linguistic features related to western Turkish, it preserves the most common linguistic features of eastern Turkish. Basically this paper will be presented in two parts consisting of a short linguistic analysis with examples from the text and transcription of the text, as well its translation into Turkish.
