Abstract :
Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection has been associated with a plethora of immuneand autoimmune perturbations.A variety of conditions ranging fromendocrinopathies to different skin diseases havebeen described in HCV infection. The associationof Hashimoto s thyroiditis (HT) with HCYinfection has been reported in literature. Somedata so far accessible are controversial. The aimof th is study was to investigate the prevalenceand clinical significance of HCV infection in patientswith HT.Materials and Methods: A total of 50 patientswith HT (35 women, 15 men, mean age: 33.82 ±13.68 years) and 50 control subjects (33 women,17 men, mean age: 32.90 ± 13.07 years) were examined.Third generation ELISA test was usedfor detection of antibodies for HCV in humansera, and anti-HCV positive patients were testedfor HCV RNA by polymerase chain reaction(PCR).Results: All normal controls were anti-HCYnegative whereas anti-HCV antibody was presentin 2 patients with HT, confirmed by RTPCR.Fisher s exact te st was used to comparerelative frequencies. Results indicated that therewas no significant difference of anti-HCY anti-bodies between patients and controls. Conclusion: In this study no relationship wasfound between HCY infection and HT, implyingthat hepatitis C virus has no a direct causal rolein the pathogenesis of HT, this however does notrule out a hit and run virus induced disease.
