Abstract
Ankara, the capital city of Turkey, and particularly Altındağ District of Ankara, hosting historical city center, present important data for analyzing urban transformation policy in Turkey from many aspects. This study addresses urban transformation issue -which has been on the agenda of national government and particularly local government in recent years- on the basis of the projects already completed and still implemented by Municipality of Altındağ. In the scope of the study, on-site examination and evaluation meetings were held directly with the municipality administration to define the characteristics differentiating these projects from the rest of the other urban transformation initiatives. Urban transformation projects already completed and still under construction were evaluated to develop suggestions for other local governments and administrations in Turkey. Besides, evidence was sought for a “sustainable” urban transformation policy, a characteristic deemed to be missing in the urban transformation projects in Turkey.
