A Periodics Analysis of the Spatial Variation in İzmir Industry in the Framework of the New Regionalism

Globalization leads differentiation in production processes on the one hand; it produces policies that enable cities to articulate with the global system, on the other hand. Within this context, New Regionalism Paradigm emphasizes the importance of spatial reconfiguration and the localities, which is an actor, in the process of mobilization of local resources. Throughout this article, the new industrial configuration is explained according to the New Regionalism Paradigm within the İzmir provincial boundaries based on the data obtained from the firm registers of the Aegean Region Chamber of Industry. The foundation years of companies that are established within the İzmir city borders are taken as a base, it is periodized in accordance with the industrial policies that are applied in Turkey. Accordingly, the scale of the entree prices and the industrial activities of the companies that are registered to the Aegean Region Chamber of Industry and operated between the years 1923 and 2013 have been examined within four terms. It is observed that the industrial sector is relocated in the periphery of the province while keeping their headquarters in the city, and thus transforming it to a commercial centre. Another finding of the study is that the spread of the industrial displacement is limited outside the İzmir provincial boundaries.
