Tradisi Intelektual Melayu-Islam: Daripada Metafora Kepada Saintifi kisme

This paper seeks to highlight the dynamics process of Malay-Islamic intellectual tradition in dealing with life issues. The analysis is based on Malay traditional proverbs (pepatah petitih) and general observation upon the reality of Malay- Islamic way of life in the past and contemporary. It is argued that the Malay- Islamic intellectual tradition has undertaken different path from the Westernintellectual tradition. Whilst the Western intellectual tradition evolved out from Secularism paradigm, the Malay-Islamic tradition on the other hand departed from a deep perception of nature which then being purifi ed by internalization of revelation (al-Qur’an and al-Hadis). The outcome from this purifi cation had been conceptualized in the form of metaphorical proverbs, vis., pepatah petitih. It hasbeen from the virtue of this paradigm that the scientifi cism in the Malay-Islamic civilization occurred. This had brought different outcome from the Western World. While the Western intellectual dynamism had brought disastrous, Melayu- Islam’s intellectual dynamism on the other hand had brought benefi t to both, the mankind and nature.
