Hegemoni Ilmu dan Masa Hadapan Bahasa Melayu

This paper discusses the importance of knowledge in the process of nation building, which means developing Malaysia into a sovereign nation anchored on the development ofknowledge. Knowledge advancement is reflected through the writing and publication ofscholarly works, particularly books and journals. Also addressed in this paper is the role of publishers and editors as a major player in the publication ofscholarly materials. Special focus is given to the role of Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka as a government-owned publisher in an effort to increase the publication of scholarly works in Malay. The factors that cause Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka failure to perform its function, including the lack of quality manuscript are also discussed. Subsequent discussions focused on issues related to western hegemony in the publication of scholarly works, and strategiesthey will use to maintain thishegemonyphenomenon. Also addressed in thispaperis the attitude of non-westem countries, andthe strategies theyuse inorder tobreak thishegemony phenomenon. This paper also discussed whythis hegemony phenomenon is very difficult to be challenged, and also the role of Malay language in oureffort to break thishegemony phenomenon in Malaysia.
