BAHASA TUGU : THE EXTINCT CREOLE

Since the Indonesian independence Creole Tugu speakers are dwindling and finally in the early 21st century Creole Tugu really extinct because there are no more speakers. Although the Tugu Creole already extinct but the vocabularies are still used in the social culture within Portuguese community of Kampung Tugu in North Jakarta. This paper will discuss the process of the development of Creole Portuguese became the language of Creole Tugu and is also will discuss the function of the language which is now extinct. The discussion will be based on the vocabulary list of Tugu Creole which was collected in 2004 and 2014. This vocabulary will be discussed using Gobard approach (1976). Gobbard stating the language has four possible functions, i.e. functions of the vernacular, vehicular, cultural references and function mystic. The study found that users of these languages are decreasing slowly and eventually Creole Tugu suffered extinction because there are no more speakers who speak the language. Although the language is no longer spoken by the people who lives in Kampung Tugu, but there are also efforts to maintain the cultural of Tugu community with continued use of Creole Tugu vocabulary in ceremony such as receive guests at the feast of Christmas, the festival of mandi-mandi, shower and also used as a lyrics in keroncong. As a conclusion the term extinction is actually still less accurate because in their socio-cultural life of the community there is still uses some vocabulary to express terms of various cultural events.
