Abstract :
This study was designed to examine language learning strategies (LLS) of students from various ethnic groups in Malaysia for learning the Malay language out of the classroom (OC) based on their performance, demographic factors and the four language skills.Data was collected using a self-report questionnaire. The questionnaire was distributed to 858 Form 4 students from Selangor, Sarawak and Sabah who were selected based on a stratified random sampling technique. Data was analysed using descriptive statistics such as frequencies, percentages, means and standard deviations. A one-way ANOVA, t-test and correlations were used in the inferential statistics. Results of the study indicate that girls from various ethnic groups employed a wide range of language learning strategies in learning the Malay language out of the classroom compared to boys. Malay students in Selangor, Sarawak and Sabah reported using a wider range of language learning strategies in comparison to other ethic groups. They also used a lot of oral, reading and writing skills instead of listening skills in learning the language. It was also found that Malay is the main language used by the subjects out of classroom, followed by English and local ethnic languages.
