Abstract :
The study attempted to examine the difference and the effect of emotional intelligence on student s discipline problem according to gender. Data were collected from 390 students from six secondary schools in Sabah. The Emotional Quotient Inventory Youth Version (EQj:YV) designed by BarOn (1997) was adapted to assess level of emotional intelligence and the Student Stress Scale designed by Insel and Ruth (1985) was adapted to investigate stress among students.The results show that female students had better interpersonal and stress management skills than male students. But in the aspect of positive impression, male students showed better skills than female students. The results of regression showed that male students who had better higher scores over all emotional intelligence and interpersonal skillshad less tendency for higher level of stress in addition, female students who had better skills in general mood and stress management had fewer tendencies towards higher level stress. Female students who had better skills in intrapersonal and stress management had less discipline problems.
