Abstract :
Abstract. This study is to coat the non-platable grade Acrilonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene (ABS) plastic with nickel by using underlayer coating technique. The underlayer coating technique introduced in this study has been proven to give satisfactory quality of plating. Several types of substances and their mixture were tested for their effectiveness as a lacquer. Results from qualitative observation showed that lacquer which was made from n-butyl acetate gives the best quality of coating compared to the other four substances or mixture which are the mixture of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and diisononyl phthalate (DINP-S), mixture of PVC and w-butyl acetate, ethyl acetate and a mixture of n-butyl acetate and 2-propanol. Besides being more attractive, the nickel plating on the substrate using this method which used n-butyl acetate as lacquer gave comparable coating strength with the conventional method.
