Abstract :
The aim of the present study is to examine changes in the internal structure of keloidal and hypertrophic scars using tissue culture techniques and histological examinations. These experiments were carried out on the excited abnormal human tissues (keloid or hypertrophic scars) as well as on normal tissues served as control. Tissue culture results indicated high density of fibroblasts in both keloidal and hyerpertrophic tissues. Increase of cytoskeleton in stained cells revealed high motility activity and powerful interaction between cells. Microscopic examination of different tissues revealed that dermis in keloid skin contains excessive amount of collagen bundles and a moderate number of fibroblasts. Some fibroblasts exhibit features of smooth muscle, which can be called myofibroblasts. The experiments showed differences in the structure and number of cells between normal and abnormal tissues, these included an increase of fibroblasts cells and collagen fibers in keloid with abnormal orientation of cells and fibers. Myofibrobasts have a crucial role in keloid formation, which should be investigated in future work.
