Abstract :
Studies have shown that there is very close connection between reading comprehension and vocabulary knowledge. This is also fact that students word knowledge plays a key role with their academic success because word knowledge is essential to successful reading comprehension. Limited word knowledge prevents students from comprehending a text properly. Encountering with unfamiliar words in reading English text often creates problem for English as second language learners in their comprehension. In this paper I have tried to find out what strategies English as second language (ESL) learners usually adopt when encountering unfamiliar words during reading text in the classroom. Findings of this study have shown that students have a genuine problem in dealing with unfamiliar vocabulary items during reading text in the classroom
