AS A TOOL OF STANDARD CREATION VERNACULAR ARCHITECTURE IN TURKEY

Vernacular architecture is defined as a unique language of architectural stylization in a region. There are various notions such as civic architecture, folk architecture, local architecture, architecture without architects, spontaneous, primitive, ethnical, folkloric, anonymous, regional architectures etc. that depict this type of architectural stylization. In this study, the notion “vernacular architecture”, which is considered to be the most impartial concept amongst those aforementioned notions, is preferred. When defining the structures that form the vernacular architecture, the starting point is the similarities of the structures and in order to reveal such similarities, the typological classification method is utilized. This method causes the diversity in the structures to be ignored and it renders the structures identical to each other. This study asks why the typological classification method used in the vernacular architecture still retains its popularity, and arguments are forward about the reasons of classification persistence in the vernacular architecture.
