Abstract :
In the 18th century, the royal art collections began turning into the first museums, while in the 19th century the museums was established in the capitals of the empires in all over the Europe. After the private museums were opened to the public access thanks to the influence of the Renaissance, standardization in classification of the artworks was introduced for the first time. The artworks were labeled according to their chronological, stylistic, periodical and etc. order. The heritage that defines the national identity is displayed in the museums. The art owes its raison d être and its power to the social construction. The museums have been moved into the metropolises from the countryside. A huge change happened in the concept of exhibition as a result of Impressionism. It saved the audience from the rules and the sanctified atmosphere and let them to be exposed to an abuse that they had never experienced before. The ready-made objects and photography as artwork and the abandonment of the interiors let the viewers participatein the exhibition process. In 1980s, the expanding notion of globalization has also affected the museums. Since the big companies started to invest on art, to be sponsor for the exhibitions and to gather their own collections, a concept of “enterprising” has emerged. After 1980, the rapid developments in technology caught the attention of many artists and it became an inspiration for them that eventually changed their means of expression and creation. After these continuous changes in art, the museum stopped catering for an elite minority and started keeping up with the developing technologies. A global access and communication became possible thanks to the virtual museums. As a result of the newly established contemporary art museums and galleries, art has become available for all of the society. Art is neither esoteric to a specific class nor hard to comprehend without any knowledge anymore. It is everywhere and available for everybody. Thus it seems that artdoes not need any specific space, audience or exhibition method. In this paper, it is explained how the concept of museum and exhibition had radically changed after 1980 and the process of this development is surveyed.
