Abstract :
In this article the approach to the image of the angel and contribution to the pictorial representation on the artworks of Marc Chagall are adressed. In the art of Chagall traditional Russian life and the Orthodox iconography were interpreted in modern sense by the artist. Tradition of Christian and Jewish religious symbols and representations which were used in the paintings are re-interpreted. From the early period of his art until his death in 1985 he tried different techniques such as painting, etching, stained glass, sculptures and reliefs. The image of angel had an important place on Chagall’s paintings between the scenes about the religion and daily life. Like the stained glass works in various structures and the paintings of the bible, the figure of the angel can be seen in many works of the artist. The use angel as a figure in monotheistic religions has a mythological origin which indicates a collective cultural consciousness. This collective understanding emerged as a new style and expression in the art of Chagall.
