Abstract :
The aim of this study is to investigate tunic, which is a form of clothing as old as human history, in iconographic context through pictures and sculptures. The different forms of clothing depicted in paintings and sculptures of antiquity carry traces of thousands of years of civilization to which they belong. Despite the disappearance of civilizations, such forms survived via iconographic works of their times. In this study, twenty-two tunic forms worn by men and women (100 B.C- 500 A.D) are examined according to certain criteria. The results of the investigation suggest that the fabric, embroidery, and models of ancient tunics shows variety in successive centuries in terms of forms and function and that there were certain tunic forms which were used not only for covering but also for elegance and good look.
