Abstract :
Inter-disciplinary collaborative approach provided by global competitive environment affects seriously the fluctuations in the world economy. As the most important part of the economy of a country, the banking sector has to be prepared against the positive/negative impacts caused by fluctuations. Banks need to increase their resistance especially to minimize the damage in countries caused by economic crisis. Therefore, some principles are obtained to provide follow up of the banks with an effective surveillance system. One of the principles obtained by Basel committee is capital sufficiency of banks against the risks. Thus, as the base of the financial sector, banks need to have capital adequacy against the risks caused by economic crisis. The focus of this study is to determine similar (or dissimilar) internationally active banks in Turkish banking sector by their capital adequacy ratios in 2012. In this context, 44-unit banks are classified by their capital adequacy ratios in 2012 with the use of clustering analysis. And also, the locations of the banks in multidimensional space are designated by multidimensional scaling technique. Silhouette index is utilized to choose the convenient cluster number affecting the quality of banks’ cluster structures.
