Abstract :
One of the words the etymological origin of which cannot be explained in Turkish is ‘balta’ (ax). No explanation is included in some etymological dictionaries while, in others, it is said to be of foreign origin. This study, considering the possibility that it is of Turkish origin, discusses how it could be derived. The result is that the word ‘balta’ could have come from the verb ‘bal-’, which means “to stab, to stick”.
