Abstract :
There were 503 deceased heart beating cases reported (possible) in 2009 from 85 hospitals with intensive care units. Of this total, 300 cases (59.6%) were fully documented to have irreversible neurologic determination of death (potential) according to our National Protocol. Families were approached in 233 cases (eligible) (77.7%) while consent for organ donation was obtained in 82 cases (35.2%) of all diagnosed and approached cases, where the families could be contacted and the issue of donation was discussed. On the other hand, family refusal to donate organs of the approached cases constituted 64.8%. Out of all consented cases (82) for organ donation, 68 cases (83%) were harvested (actual) during 2009.
