CREATING ISLAMIC CARING COMMUNITY: IBN KHALDUN S APPROACH

Caring Community from an Islamic perspective is not only a community that provides progressive care, but it places the Quran and Sunnah as the main source of its formation. This paper aims to analyze 1) the background of the life and thought of Ibn Khaldun, 2) community building features according to Ibn Khaldun, and 3) Ibn Khaldun s approaches in building a caring community. This paper involves secondary data analysis approach to analyze existing materials as a means to gather and discuss the issues in shaping a caring community. As the focus of this article is on the caring community from Ibn Khaldun s view, the main source of this article is Ibn Khaldun and his thought manifested in al-Muqaddimah (2006). The results showed that Ibn Khaldun was a leading Islamic scholar in the area of civilization studies. His looms were not only recognized by Muslims until now, but were also recognized by non-Muslim figures. Ibn Khaldun outlined six characteristics of caring community and four approaches to creating a caring community. Ibn Khaldun s approach starts with an understanding of the needs of human social life. The government should hold justice as the fundamental element for their administration. Some features and appropriate approaches that support the formation of community are discussed in this paper.
