Abstract :
This study focuses on the utterances among the Banjar community in Selangor. The objectives of this study were to identify and discuss the speech uttered among the Banjars from the semantic and pragmatic aspects. The samples of the study are families in the community of Pulau Carey, Kuala Langat, Selangor. This study used the qualitative approach which consists of observation and interview methods. Interview sessions with the family were recorded. The data were gathered during festive celebration, engagement and wedding event. The data were transcribed and the transcripts were analysed from the pragmatic aspect using the Relevance Theory by Sperber Wilson (1986). The results showed that uttered speech can be analysed much clearer by applying the pragmatic knowledge. This is because, pragmatic knowledge is able to unveil the real meaning based on the real context of a situation. To understand certain speech, few aspects like context, context effect and processing must be analyzed based on the Relevans Theory. Therefore, the speech meaning depends on the manifestation context and real situation.
