THE MEANING AND FUNCTION OF APPARELS IN SYAIR AGUNG MALAY MANUSCRIPT

The analysis of Naskhah Melayu Syair Agung (next NMSA) had found a number of words referring to apparels that include clothings, jewelries, and appliances or equipments. As referring to the concept of Malay apparels which have been produced by some fashion researchers, the NMSA mostly portrayed apparels that have equal meanings and functions. While,others depicted it had different meaning and use or rarely exist or may not relevant in current context. This study aims to identify the apparels portrayal in NMSA and describe its functions, usages and types in the current context and manuscript itself. The text analysis focused on the words representing several type of apparels which consist clothing, jewelry and appliances or equipments. The study found that a major apparels portrayal in the manuscript has similar meaning and function as being used in modern apparels text. Alas, a few had been disappear, totally meaningless or had not any meaning suited with current terms.
