EUPHEMISM ELEMENTS IN THE NOVEL OF JALAN RETAK BY A. SAMAD SAID

This article discusses the elements of euphemism in teen novel. Euphemism is a form of substituting words that considered to be rude, disrespectful, insulting or offensive in order to create the softer, nicer and more polite language. This research uses the textual analysis method. The material in this research is the novel Jalan Retak by A. Samad Said. The objectives are to identify elements of euphemism, analyse the true meaning and discuss the factors of elements of euphemism in this novel. In euphemism studies, there are some non-familiar elements with imprecise meaning. This is because euphemism is one of the language styles that enrich and amend its original meaning. Studying the meaning in elements of euphemism is beyond the aspect of semantic and syntactic, which also includes pragmatic aspect. Other than that, euphemism is a linguistics behaviour that exceeds the boundaries of feelings. The Symbolic Logic Theory will utilize in this study. The analyses conclude that there are 35 elements of euphemism found in Jalan Retak novel. The main factors of euphemism elements are condition and age. Therefore, studies on euphemism are necessary because it is not merely about politeness but also the social wellbeing.
