Abstract
The aim of the current study was to evaluate hopelessness and loneliness levels of the 6^th, 7^th and 8^th year students of regional primary boarding schools (RPBS) according to whether they played sports or not. The population of the research was consisted of sports-player students and sedentary students of RPBS of Hatay Province. The sample of the research was made up by 260 secondary school students (123 girls and 137 boys) who studied in RPBS of Hassa, Kırıkhan, Reyhanlı and Yayladağ counties. “UCLA Loneliness Scale” originally designed by Russel, Peplau and Ferguson (1978) and “BECK HOPELESSNESS SCALE” (BHS) designed by Beck et al. (1974) were used in order to determine hopelessness and loneliness levels of the participants. Hopelessness and loneliness levels of the students were compared in terms of gender, being sports-players or sedentary, sports-age according to whether they played sports or not. As a result, we could not found any statistically significant differences in loneliness and hopelessness levels between sportsplayers and sedentaries in terms of gender variable (P 0.05). The correlations performed between the participants’ scores of hopelessness and loneliness showed that as loneliness increased so did hopelessness (p 0.1); however, there was an adverse correlation between hopelessness levels and sports-age and it was found out that hopelessness levels decreased as the sports-age increased (p 0.1)
