Abstract :
The aim of this study was to compare the situation in Turkey in a 10 years’ span of time, between 2002-2012, regarding the number of registered athletes and their distribution according to sex and branch with the numbers of some developed countries in sport. Screening model has been used. Related information was obtained from the countries’ ministries of sport and related institutions. The results indicated that the number of athletes increased 7 times between the years 2002-2012. Furthermore, it is determined that the total number of licenced athletes consist of %3.87 of the general population. Furthermore, it is determined that the number of licenced male athletes is 3.4 times much more than the number of female athletes. As a result, it is determined that the number of licenced athletes in Turkey is inadequate in terms of the number of licenced athletes and distribution according to sex or branches when it is compared with the countries successful in sport, despite the rising in different proportions in every year.
