Abstract :
Cyprus which is the sovereignty of the Ottoman Empire in 1571, is signed to the UK temporarily, by the Treaty of Ayastefanos in 1878. The island, which is dropped to the British officially by the The Treaty of Lausanne, has become a problem, including Turkey s in 1950s, because of the Greek’s violent actions as a result of their request of joining to Greece (enosis). In 1960 the Republic of Cyprus is established in 1960. Within the framework of the Akritas Plan, violent movements for the Turkish Cypriots has started in 1963 Christmas. Located at the management of the coalition Governments formed after the May 27, Ismet Inonu, primarily opted for the path of negotiation to defend the rights of Turks in the island, started the intervention to Cyprus when the Greek Cypriot attacks has ascended, but attempt is not realized because of US President Johnson s letter. Prime Minister İsmet İnönü, has clearly confessed that he is left alone about Cyprus subject by the West and has contacted with Soviet Union, which the relationship is binden since Worl War II as a Turkish foreign policy, and as a result suceeded to attract Soviet Union to “federation” which is supporting Makarios. This article describes the Cyprus Policy of Governments of Đnönü between the years 1961-1965.
