Abstract :
Modern Greece has been the scene of periods with ups and downs politically from its founding date until now. One of the most significant characteristics of Greek political history is in the context of the regime of the nation, many political experiences such as absolute monarchy, constitutional monarchy and parliamentary republic have been experienced. However it’s remarkable that the regimes of constitutional monarchy and republic had a continuation but with breaks. In this context, considering the short history of monarchy in Greece, it’s possible to meet a largely adverse and interesting scene in respect to the ends of the kings. Indeed, Otto, the first King of Greece was discrowned, King George I, who had ascended the throne afterwards, was assassinated, Constantine I, son of George I, was disenthroned two times-one was provisional, his son Alexander passed away by a domesticated monkey’s bite, King George II was dethroned by the proclamation of the republic, only the regality of King Paul, brother of George II, did not end up adversely. After the death of Paul, Constantine II ascended the throne of Kingdom of Greece, but he left the country after his unsuccessful countercoup attempt in the period of Greek Military Junta. Consequently the abdication of Constantine II was the “de facto” end of the monachy in Greece. In this study the short history of Greek monarchy will be evaluated and the formation and progress of monarchy in Greece and the positions of Greek kings in nation’s political scene will be analyzed.
