Abstract :
United States followed the Monroe Doctrine in foreign policy after gaining political independence. But in the beginning of the First World War, the New York Times, the American press began to debate Monroe Doctrine which refuses forming military and political alliances unless necessary. These discussions are the signs of the change in US foreign policy in the 20th century. Press undertook the role of preparing the public in exchange for a portion of its foreign policy. In this regard, America s policy towards the Ottoman Empire was followed from The New York Times. The policy of the Ottoman Empire which is on the other side of the relationship with the United States, was compared by means of examining the Ottoman press Tanin, İkdam, Tercüman-ı Hakikat, Servet-i Fünun, Ceride-i Sofiye, Polis Mecmuası with the New York Times. US-Turkish relations have been explained in the context of some remarkable examples of Ottoman and American press. The abolishment of capitulations by the Ottomans, what would happen to the Ottoman Empire after the war, and the news related to Germany s sinking the ship Lusitania, are examples reflected in both the Ottoman and the American press. Through these examples, The convenience of Turkish-American relations to the Monroe Doctrine while entering the First World War has been questioned and the role of the press has been explained.
