Abstract :
This study deals with the establishment and manufacturing activities of Izmit Corporation of Cellulose and Paper Factories, a pioneering industrial enterprise of the Republican period, as well as its effect on economy. The subject was limited to paper production activities in Turkey during the Republican People’s Party (CHP) period (1936-1950) and paper production activities in Turkey during the Democrat Party period (1950-1960). The subject was handled under these titles. Evaluations are based on numerical data concerning the production activities of Izmit Corporation of Cellulose and Paper Factories and its effect on economy. The gaps in the literature on the subject of the study were eliminated through use of primary sources. The analysis involves comparison between the developments regarding paper and cellulose industry in Turkey and in the world during the above-mentioned period. The use of paper is an important indicator of a country’s civilization level, progress and development; hence, the present study zeros in on this subject in particular. The results of the study are as follows: paper production and variety were increased with the first paper factory established in 1936 and the other subsequent paper and cellulose factories each year. Due to increase in population in the aftermath of the World War II, paper consumption was high, which made it compulsory to extend and improve the current factories. After the modernization of the companies, paper production was increased, and it made contributions to national economy.
