Abstract :
Father and Daughter is a short animated film by Michael Dudok de Wit produced in 2000. The story is of the longings of a daughter—as she grows from a young child to an old age—towards her missing father who went sailing to the sea, never to return. Such is the beauty and sadness that was evoked by the animation that it has garnered rave reviews from critics, including an Academy Award. In our article,we analyse the symbolic structure of sadness portrayed in Father and Daughter, through its narrativity and condensation. Borrowing Paul Wells’ idea from his seminal Understanding Animation (1998) in the analytic of condensation as cinematic technique of compressing mode of storytelling through representative means, we elaborate on the types of symbols that are prevalent in Father in Daughter, that give way to the possible momentums of melancholic-yearning reading
