Abstract :
The aim of equine wound treatment is rapid healing with optimal functional andcosmetic outcome. Meticulous evaluation, surgical treatment following Halstead sprinciples and logical choice of dressings create the physiological conditions forhealing. Many traumatic injuries that are treated by primary closure break down andthen heal by second intention. Initially this occurs by accident, but with experiencethis is anticipated, allowing time and money to be saved. Owners should be warnedabout the long duration and high cost of treatment at the outset. This paper reviewsthe principles of equine wound treatment.
