The Importance of Public Participation in Defining Areas of Development in the City of Antalya

Cities are the places that natural environment and human activities come together. It is extremely important to consider public opinion and their needs in determining new areas for urban development. In that way, planners will be available to assert the precise usage and conservation balance data’s. This study evaluates the importance of public participation in defining areas of development in the city of Antalya and emphasizes the need of a multi-faceted approach for urban planning. The research presents the historical development, population characteristics and land use characteristics of the natural structure of Antalya and determines local people opinions and suggestions for urban development. Approaches for the determination of the individuals Antalya city’s urban development, a questionnaire based statistical study was used instead of standardized forms and a face to face survey was conducted in the urban area. With the questionnaire, the reasons and processes of urbanization studied, urban migration, problems and suggestions for urban development of local community and socio-economic structure examined in detail. As a result of this research, the importance of considering public opinions and suggestions in planning approach, and the creation of an identity in accordance with specifications of the city indicated. It is concluded that in urbanization studies these kind of planning approaches are required for sustainability of cities.
