Abstract :
Organizations can be seen as a socio-technical system, even more as living organisms; therefore businesses do not have plenty time to grasp the rapid changes, to identify problems, to find solutions, to try the most suitable of these and to eliminate the problems. Businesses in the light of the contingency approach are an open system and in constant contact with the environment. This requires inevitable interaction and exchange and sometimes it can also lead to vital problems for businesses such as crisis as a result of this interaction. Crises can be described as- a difficult time to overcome -in the most general sense. Being ready to this kind of times which can lead businesses to close up all functional activities can be used as a way of overcoming the crisis easily or coming out of the crisis by profit. On the other hand, when looking at the subject from the management perspective, crises are seen as a high considered situation by managers. In today s competitive business environment, while managers are pursuiting proper planning of the future, they are also responsible of taking necessary measures to sustain the life of the company against possible dangers. Even though crisis can be given as an example to these difficult times, with the dynamic and changing nature of crisis as well as taken measures, crisis can be seen as an opportunity. Business world is changing all the time. Ability in following up these changes and adapting developments in a very short time is not something that any business can easily accomplish. Crises can be given as an example to those mentioned as difficulties. However, it may not be all correct to classify crises as a negative development. There are lots of companies out in business world which managed crises.Whatever the reasons for the emergence of crises, they have definitely an effect on businesses. This effect can be eliminated and used in a positive way if there is a crisis management plan in hand with a correct crisis communication approach. In regards to these explanations, the purpose of this study is to explain the phenomenon of the crisis into an opportunity in theory and to consolidate the idea of using crises as an opportunity with real business examples in practise. Therefore, we aim to contribute to the development of culture which sees crises as an opportunity rather than a loss. To be able to clarify these better, there are detailed definitions of crisis, crisis management in the text and some real world examples to understand perception of crises as an opportunity. These examples cover companies from Turkey as well as USA and EU Countries to make a broad evaluation.
