The Activities Carried out in the Universities in Turkey within the Scope of 2019 Year of Prof. Dr. Fuat Sezgin

The obituary tradition has an important place in the Islamic history and literature. The things written because of the death of famous people such as Scholars, Sultans, emirs, Sufis, etc., contain serious information about both the deceased and the political, social and cultural situation of the period. In the history of Islam, an important literature that has the quality of a source work has been formed. This commemorative tradition corresponds to the concept of necrology in modern times. In this context, obituary and necrology are the articles written for the same purpose. In generally, information about the life and works of the deceased is given. The commemorative scientific studies and commemorative activities being organized in recent year can be expressed as a contemporary counterpart of obituary. The most famous examples of that situation are the scientific activities conducted in Turkey after the death of Prof Dr Fuat Sezgin in the memory of him. In the history of Islam, the first examples of obituaries were written on the death of muhaddiths. When Prof Dr Fuat Sezgin s studies on hadith are taken into consideration, it is seen that after his death a tradition related to the Islamic sciences has been experienced. Therefore, the studies on the deceased should be recorded in a scientific publication as an obituary activity.Fuat Sezgin, a worldwide known historian with his important works on the history of Islamic science, died on June 30, 2018 in Istanbul when he was 93 years old. With the loss of this important scientist, 2019 was declared as Prof. Dr. Fuat Sezgin Year” with the Presidential Circular No. 2018/6 signed by the President of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan. In this context, throughout 2019, many activities have been scheduled to be held in Turkey. A cooperation protocol was signed between Prof. Dr. Fuat Sezgin Foundation for Islamic History of Science Research and Kırıkkale University to coordinate activities. With this protocol, it is aimed to introduce studies of Prof. Dr. Fuat Sezgin on the history of Islamic science at national and international level. In this direction, throughout 2019, Prof. Dr. Fuat Sezgin has been tried to be introduced by over five hundred activities organized in our country and in the world. As the coordinating university, Kırıkkale University, by signing protocols with the universities in Turkey, has supported the organizations of activities such as conferences, symposiums, panels and the publishing of special issues in the university journals about Prof. Dr. Fuat Sezgin. It seems that many events in this purpose have been organized in the universities in Turkey during the 2019. In this study, it is aimed to determine how productive the year of Prof. Dr. Fuat Sezgin has been by examining the activities carried out in the universities. Therefore, it is tried to be determined which issues related to Prof. Dr. Fuat Sezgin were most focused in the activities organized in the universities in Turkey by making a list of the activities.
