Abstract :
The aim of this study was to examine the historical development, structure, characteristics, and duties of the National College Athletic Association (NCAA), which operates among universities in the United States. In the study, performed the necessary literature was conducted and in the conclusion section comparison has been made of theTurkey University Sports Federation with the US National College Athletic Association (NCAA). The study has been prepared as a review article. The study was approved by the social and humanities ethics committee of Erciyes University. It is a non-profit organization with the highest number of universities, students and financial income among the sports activities carried out among universities. NCAA provides nearly half a million university athletes, 19,750 teams, 52,500 participants, 90 championships annually, 3 different departments and 24 sports branches with the participation of men and women athletes. Each NCAA member university has different academic requirements for admission of students-athletes to universities. NCAA is a billion-dollar industry in the United States and has been going on for years. All income collected by NCAA in the pool are transferred to universities and conference champions. In the financial report for the year ended August 31, 2017, the NCAA reported that the total revenue was $ 1,045 billion. University students who are students-athletes in NCAA perform “amateur” sports activities. Student-athletes are not paid any fees other than university education scholarship. The majority of NCAA s revenues are television broadcasting revenues. Recently, the huge increase in NCAA income has been subject to criticism that student-athletes are unfair because of the fact that only scholarships are granted to student-athletes.As a result, NCAA intercollegiate sports activities have a particularly large audience potential. This audience demand ensures that the sporting activities of the university are financed by TV broadcasting, advertising and other sponsors. Turkey University Sports Federation operating in Turkey is coordinating college sports like NCAA in the United States. However, financial support can not be provided by the NCAA s member universities in Turkey. Turkey does not have sponsors that will provide great financial gain university sports leagues and other activities. University Sports Federation of Turkey carries out its activities mostly with financial support provided by the Republic of Turkey. Turkey accepts students in public universities for free. Students enter universities by winning as a result of their exams. In this respect, competition is not high in university sports activities. In order to increase competition in university sports activities, it is thought that providing scholarship opportunities to students will increase competition in university sports. If Turkish ntercollegiate sporting activities would raise the competition level, quality and with the increase in the number of spectators; especially TV broadcasters, advertising, and other sponsors have the potential to pay big money for the broadcasting rights and advertising of these competitions. Incomes from TV broadcasting, advertising and other sponsoring organizations will contribute to the increase of the quality of sports activities, especially as a scholarship for student-athletes and additional income for universities.
