Abstract
Coronary artery disease (CAD) is the most com-mon type of heart disease. It is the leading causeof death in the world in both men and women. Coronary artery disease happens when the arteriesthat supply blood to heart muscle become hardenedand narrowed. This is due to the build up of choles-terol and other material, called plaque on their innerwalls. As the build up grows, less blood can flowthrough the arteries. As a result heart muscle can’tget the blood or oxygen it needs. This can lead tochest pain (angina) or a heart attack. Treatment ofCAD is aimed at controlling symptoms and slowingor stopping the progression of disease. The methodof treatment is based on many factors determined bysymptoms, a physical exam, and diagnostic testing.
