Learner variables can affect ESL learners communicative competence in learning the English language and the ability of the learners to comprehend literary texts (McDonough Shaw, 1993). There are variables like intelligence which are difficult to measure and may have significant effects on the learner s ability, while other variables like the learning environment can influence motivation which can determine the success of learning a language.
