Abstract :
Rapid and accurate diagnosis of sheep‐goatpox disaese is very important for controling the disease. The aim of this study was to evaluate the use of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in detection of sheep‐goatpox virus from different clinical samples. For this purpose, 168 clinical specimens of 53 animals from 11 outbreaks in Erzurum and its surroundings were collected. According to the PCR results, sheep‐goatpox virus DNA was detected from 96.2 % (51/53), 76.9 % (40/52), 90.4 % (19/21), 42.8 % (9/21) and 61.9 % (13/21) of cutaneous, nasal and oral samples, lung, liver and lymph nodules, respectively. As a result, it is concluded that the use of cutaneous and lung samples is suitable for diagnosis of sheep‐goatpox virus with PCR.
