Cutaneous Leishmaniasis of the Eyelid

Cutaneous Leishmaniasis of the eyelid is uncommon in the world. The eyelid is involved in only 2.5 % of cases of cutaneous leishmaniasis, probably because of the movement of the lids that prevents the fly vector from biting the skin in this region [1]. We report a case of a 52 year old previously well Nigerian male, came with a 6 month history of painless progressive left upper eyelid swelling with erythema, erosions discharge. His recent travel to Nigeria was 3 months prior to the development of his lesion. Histopathology report showed an infiltration of histiocytes containing rod shaped paranuclear kinetoplasts. Giemsa stain showed many Leishmania Donovan bodies. The patient was started on Itraconazole 200mg daily for 2 months, and he showed marked improvement.
