Abstract
Of the 55,000 children and youth who die annually inthe United States, one third of them die from life-threateningconditions. In any given year, about 1.3 millionchildren suffer from serious illnesses and could benefitfrom hospice and palliative care services. Since mostchildren with life-threatening illnesses receive aggressivecare until death, the majority of children die in institutions, hospitals, long-term care facilities or rehabilitationcenters.
