Quality of Life and Related Factors of Older People in Nursing Home

Objective: The research is carried out as a descriptive study to determine the quality of life and related factors of older people who live in nursing homes. Method: The population of research was consisted of 402 older people who live in public Nursing Homes within the provincial borders of Ankara. The sample of survey was consisted of 186 older people who 65 years old and upper, nondemented and not hearing impairment. Data for the research was collected by questionaire form developed to determine the descriptive characterisitics of the older people and characterisitics of nursing home and the quality of life was evaluated by using World Health Organization Quality of Life Instrument Older Adults Module (WHOQOL-OLD). Data analysis was performed using SPSS 11.5 software. Data analysis were done One Way Anova and t test. Findings: According to the research, 52.2% of participants are among 75-84 years, 69.9% were widower, %47.2 had least two chronic illness, 33.4% were illiterate, 12.5% didn’t have social insurance. The mean values of the domain scores of the WHOQOL-OLD were as follows: “Sensory-Abilities” 15.82±3.73; “Autonomy” 12.49±2.86; “Past-Present-and-Future-Activities” 11.80 ± 3.3; “Social-Participation” 12.35±3.22; “Death-and-Dying” 11.63±3.49 and “Intimacy” 11.80 ± 3.2. The mean values for the total module score were 76.11±16.8. Conclusion: Socioeconomic status, lesiure time activities, participate the activities of nursing home, relationship with family, residents and employee were found correlated with different subscales of WHOQOL-OLD.
