A Critical Analysis of the Information Society Theories’ Conception onHuman Beings

While a comprehensive restructuring had been started in the 1970s in order torelaunch capital accumulation and overcome the crisis of capitalism, a group oftheorists qualified the troubled transformation as the birth pain of a new society,information society, with much more prosperity and equality. Thus, they justified therestructuring of capitalism. The main assumption of the article is that informationsociety theories, a key aspect in the symbolic side of the restructuring, underline aconception of an “ideal” human being with certain qualities, and this is very important in order to understand contemporary capitalism and actual conditions of men andwomen, given the impact of these theories on policy processes.
