NATIONALISM IN THE NOVEL PANGGIL AKU MELAJU

Malay nationalism refers to the understanding of upholding the love for the Malay race and the homeland, namely Malaysia. Therefore, language cannot be separated from Malay nationalism because the Malay language is also a symbol of Malay cultural roots. This study analysis the novel Panggil Aku Melaju (PAM) by Rahmat Haroun Hashim (2008) published by Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka. This novel is suitable for analysis from the point of nationalism because it contains the Malay language issues and polemics in the Teaching and Learning of Science and Mathematics in English (PPSMI). The novel clearly illustrates problems especially with regards to the issue of the position of the Malay language that occur in our country. The purpose of the study is to analysis how far nationalism is expressed in the novel PAM. This study uses a conceptual approach of the concept of nationalism by Hans Kohn (1965), Sukarno (1988), Srijanti et. al (2009), and Elie Kedourie (1966). The novel contains elements of nationalism that strive for the position and importance of the Malay language in this country. The elements of psychology are found to be effective in the story by making the novel interesting as described from the point of nationalism. The findings have shown that the element of nationalism is revealed in the novel through a passion for the Malay language. The psychological elements indeed reflect implicit meanings related to nationalism.
