Abstract :
In this study, first the Quranic notion of human prophet is summarised. Afterwards the idea of al- haqiqa al-Muhammadiyya, which appears to contradict the Quranic perspective, is briefly explained. This is followed by a discussion on the emergence of this concept and its possible foreign sources. Due to the fact that this theory has been mainly spread among the Sufis, their understanding of al- haqiqa al-Muhammadiyya is summarised, after which the contents of four Sufi commentaries on the Qur an are examined, specifically focusing on the way this idea is explained and which verses are used as proof texts in support of it. Subsequently, the coherence of these interpretations are discussed. Considering the historical and textual context of the verses used, none of this seems to present sound argumentation for this theory. Furthermore, it is also understood that most of the hadiths employed in defense of this concept are fabricated, and the few of them that are sound appear to be misinterpreted.
