Abstract :
The Abbasid caliph of that period, an-Nasir-Lidinillah, had called the ruler of the Ayyubidstate, Salah al-Din Ayyubid, for help following the capture of Zabid city in Yemen, in which thekhutbah was read out in the name of the Abbasids, by an adherent of a Kharijite, who had begun having the khutbah read out in his name and as a result of the intervention of Salah al-Din Ayyubid the khutbah has begun to be read in the name of the Ayyubid ruler after the Abbasid caliph. In these territories which were ruled by the Eyubids by proxy following the death of the ruler of Yemen, al-Melik al-Masud Atsiz, Nur al-Din Omar b. Ali b. Rasul, who waged a war of independence, expelled the Ayyubids from Yemen and then wanted to capture Mekka, which is a part of Hijaz territorities. Following a long struggle he has let his name read out in the pulpits in Mecca and Yemen after the Abbasid caliph al-Mustansir‑Billah has recognized his legitimacy by confering him taqlid. This article aims at exposing the war of independence waged by Nur al-Din Omar in Yemen and Mecca and his being awarded taqlid by the Abbasid caliph al-Mustansir-Billah in order to obtain legitimacy in this region.
