Abstract :
The prevalence of antithyroperoxidase antibodies in 40 infants and children with Down syndrome wasdetermined and compared to their prevalence in 40 healthy children. The association of antithyroperoxidase antibodies and thyroid dysfunction in this group of Down syndrome patientswas also studied. Twenty six Down syndrome patients were positive forantithyroperoxidase antibodies (65%), while in the control group only 6 were positive (15%), p 0.001. Thirteen (32.5%) Down syndrome patients had subclinical hypothyroidism i.e. normal T4 and raised TSH ( 5mIU/ml). Eight (61.5%) of them were positive for antithyroperoxidase antibodies. In the control group, 5 (12.5%) had subclinicalhypothyroidism, 2 (40%) were positive for antithyroperoxidase antibodies. This supports the observation that the most frequently observed thyroid abnorrTlality appears to be subclinical hypothyroidism in patients with Down syndrome.
