LOCALISATION SUGGESTIONS FOR THREE CITIES TO THE SOUTH OF THE PROPONTIS

This article discusses localization suggestions for three cities which are situated to the south of the Marmara Sea (ancient Propontis), in Balıkesir and Bursa provinces (ancient Hellespontine Phrygia) today. Within the scope of the article, historical information and locations of the settlements referred as polis are also compiled. Various localization proposals have been made earlier are also mentioned in this text. In addition, information is given about Placia and Artaio Teichos, which should be located near the towns subject to the article. Lastly, settlements are dated with pottery sherds which were obtained from the surveys and localization theories are developed. It is suggested that Dareion should be localized on Peladarion (an abandoned Greek town) or named Çiftekaya today near Gündoğdu village (Bursa/Osmangazi), Miletou Teichos should be localized on a fortified hilltop named Dedebayırı near Akçakoyun village (Bursa/Karacabey) and Skylake should be localized on the Çalılıburun near Yenice village (Balıkesir/Bandırma) thanks to the evaluations made within the scope of the article.
