Abstract :
With the lowering of the age at school from 7 years to 6 years, the process of literacy teaching has become more important for class teachers. The aim of this study is to determine the effectiveness of the game teaching method in the literacy teaching. In the 2015-2016 academic year, a research was conducted in a state primary school in Tepebaşı district of Eskişehir. In the mixed method study, experimental and control groups were determined by simple random sampling. The experimental group consisted of 20 students and the control group consisted of 22 students. In the experimental group, the teaching method was used in the first literacy teaching process. Research data were collected by reading comprehension test, voice reading speed form, writing speed form, observation and interview. Quantitative data in the study; Descriptive statistical methods were analyzed using the Mann Whitney U test. Qualitative data were analyzed using content analysis. As a result of the analysis of the research findings, the games performed by the game teaching method attracted the attention of the students; students enjoyed during the games and were happy. There was no statistically significant difference between the reading speed of the students in the control group and the speed of reading, the speed of reading and the comprehension of reading comprehension. The classroom teacher has positive views on the teaching method of teaching the first reading and writing. According to the classroom teacher, the teaching method is effective and efficient in the process of teaching literacy. It is recommended to use games in the process of literacy teaching.
