Abstract :
This paper describes the current state of use of VRbased simulation tools to assist the design, development and implementation of a range of complex projects within BNFL Magnox Generation. VR systems are used throughout the life cycle of a project. As a conceptual design tool, parametric techniques have been used to optimize limb lengths of a manipulator used for detailed in-reactor inspection. Extensive path planning is carried out off-line, allowing the rehearsal phase to concentrate on difficult issues such as interactions with the work site. During the rehearsal and site implementation phases, the use of a real-time display of a manipulator working in a simulated reactor environment supplements the views from surveillance cameras. Finally, use of output from the VR system can support the quality assurance and documentation aspects of a task by providing further evidence that the correct components have been inspected/repaired.
