Cicalas asymptotic approach to the linear shell theory

A presentation of the general aspects of Cicalaʹs approach to the linear shell theory is summarized starting with the shell geometry definition. The asymptotic approach in Cicalaʹs way of thinking is described including the application of the Legendre operator for the transformation of a three-dimensional problem in a two-dimensional one having infinite unknowns. A description of the scalarized-form of the solution system is indicated and an application to the membrane approximation is pointed out. The main concepts of the approach are emphasized and some of them are clarified with the aid of specific very simple examples.
